Butland Swaps Ibrox for Premier League Return with Hull
Butland exits Rangers as Hull move early to add top-flight experience
Premier League new boys Hull City have wasted no time dipping into the Scottish market, snapping up Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland as their first signing of the summer.
The 33-year-old moves to the MKM Stadium for a reported £3 million fee, penning a two-year deal with the option of a further 12 months, as boss Sergej Jakirovic begins reshaping his squad ahead of the Tigers’ long-awaited top-flight comeback.
Butland departs Ibrox after three seasons as a near ever-present, clocking up 157 appearances and playing every single minute of Rangers’ 2025–26 Premiership campaign as they finished third. The former England international was a standout figure during his time in Glasgow, lifting the League Cup in his debut season and sweeping up both the club’s Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year awards.
Prior to his move to Ibrox, Butland spent seven years at Stoke City, making 77 Premier League appearances, and also had a spell with Crystal Palace. He famously became England’s youngest-ever goalkeeper when he debuted at just 19 back in 2012, going on to earn nine caps.
Speaking after sealing the move, Butland said: “I’m delighted it’s all sorted now and I’m really excited to be here. The Premier League is the best league in the world and it’s a great opportunity to be back on that stage. I believe it’s the level I’m capable of playing at.”
Hull sealed promotion with a narrow 1-0 win over Middlesbrough in the Championship play-off final at Wembley in May, ending a nine-year absence from the top flight.
The move also comes amid significant goalkeeper traffic between the two clubs, with Hull offloading Ivor Pandur to Rangers as part of a wider effort to stay compliant with the EPL’s profit and sustainability rules.
Butland’s arrival is expected to be just the first of several additions as Hull gear up for Premier League football.
