Celtic confirm signing of Egyptian international winger Haissem Hassan from Real Oviedo
Egypt international winger joins Scottish champions on four-year deal after standout World Cup and La Liga spell with Real Oviedo.
Celtic have officially announced the signing of Egyptian international winger Haissem Hassan from Real Oviedo on a four-year deal with an option for a further year, subject to international clearance.
The 24-year-old becomes manager Martin O’Neill’s third addition to the Scottish champions’ squad and will wear the number 23 jersey at Parkhead.
In a statement released on Wednesday evening, Celtic said they were “delighted” to secure Hassan after a protracted pursuit that saw several other clubs interested in the winger.
Hassan, who impressed for Egypt at the 2026 World Cup, described the move as “a great moment and a real honour”, citing Celtic’s history and supporters as key factors in his decision.
“When I heard about Celtic being interested in me, I had to get here and be part of the club,” he said. “I am really looking forward to getting to know all my team-mates and facing the challenges we have ahead of us. I want to play my part in bringing success to our fans.”
Celtic manager Martin O’Neill welcomed the signing as a significant boost to Celtic’s attacking options heading into the club’s Champions League qualifiers.
“We are delighted to bring Haissem to Celtic and I think the club has done really well to secure a player of such quality, with a number of other clubs interested in him,” O’Neill said.
The manager highlighted Hassan’s experience at both domestic and international level, adding: “I know he is excited about being with us and I am sure our fans will enjoy the energy and attacking intent which Haissem will bring to matches. I hope he will become a very important member of our squad going forward.”
Hassan began his professional career with Châteauroux, making his senior debut as a teenager in Ligue 2 before earning a move to Villarreal in 2020. He developed through Villarreal B, had loan spells at Mirandés and Sporting Gijón, and broke into La Liga with Villarreal before joining Real Oviedo in summer 2024.
At Oviedo, Hassan played a key role in the club’s promotion to La Liga in his first season, contributing four goals and three assists, then featured regularly in Spain’s top flight last term. He made his senior debut for Egypt earlier in 2026 and went on to appear at the World Cup.
Reports indicate Celtic agreed an initial fee in the region of £6 million, potentially rising to £9 million with add-ons, as they moved to finalise the deal ahead of next week’s Champions League play-off against LASK Linz.
