Hearts Suffer Record-Equalling European Defeat at Benfica
Hearts suffer a humiliating 6-1 defeat at Benfica, leaving their Europa League hopes in tatters ahead of the second-leg in Edinburgh next week.
Hearts were comprehensively outclassed by Benfica in Lisbon as they suffered a 6-1 defeat in the first leg of their Europa League third qualifying round tie.
The result equals Hearts’ joint-heaviest defeat in European competition and leaves Wouter Vrancken’s side with an impossible task in next week’s second leg. Benfica’s commanding advantage means the return fixture is a mere formality, with the Portuguese giants already having one foot in the play-off round.
There had been no expectation that Hearts would produce an upset at the Estádio da Luz, but the ease with which Benfica dismantled the Edinburgh side in the first half made for painful viewing for Hearts fans.
Hearts conceded after only two minutes. Leandro Barreiro’s cutback found veteran forward Rafa Silva, who had the composure to tap the ball beyond the helpless goalkeeper and give Benfica the perfect start.
The second goal arrived from another familiar source. Benfica won a corner and Hearts failed to deal with the delivery, allowing captain Tomás Araújo to rise above Blair Spittal and head into the net.
The goal bore similarities to some of the strikes Hearts conceded during their Champions League qualifying defeat by Sturm Graz two weeks ago. Defensive weaknesses were once again ruthlessly exposed at the highest level.
Hearts briefly showed signs of resistance, but their attempts to chase the game left gaps for Benfica to exploit. Laurent Mendy then brought down Gianluca Prestianni in the box, conceding a needless penalty.
Vangelis Pavlidis made no mistake from 12 yards, drilling the ball down the middle to put Benfica 3-0 ahead. Hearts went into half-time facing a near-insurmountable deficit as the tie effectively slipped away from them.
Benfica turn the screw
Hearts did have opportunities to make the scoreline more respectable just before the break. Mendy struck the crossbar with a header after excellent work from Calvin Miller on the right, while Spittal sent a free-kick narrowly wide.
But Benfica remained in complete control and restored their dominance after the interval.
Hearts gifted their hosts a fourth goal when possession was surrendered on the edge of the box. Prestianni punished the error, curling a composed finish beyond the goalkeeper to make it 4-0.
With the outcome no longer in doubt, Benfica eased off the gas and Hearts were finally able to enjoy longer spells of possession. Their reward came in the 72nd minute when Tom Renaud finished off an excellent move, firing the ball into the bottom corner.
The goal offered the travelling supporters something to remember from an otherwise miserable night and provided a rare moment of quality from the visitors.
However, Benfica were not done for the night. Hearts were caught in possession once again late in the match, allowing former Aston Villa striker Jhon Durán to lash home a fifth goal.
The misery was completed deep into injury time when Oisin McEntee handled inside the area, after VAR intervened. Andreas Schjelderup converted the resulting penalty with the final kick of the match.
A night to forget
The defeat leaves Hearts facing another bruising European exit after their earlier 6-0 aggregate defeat against Sturm Graz in the Champions League qualifying.
Three of Benfica’s six goals came directly from errors or avoidable defensive lapses, while the gulf in speed, quality and composure between the teams was stark throughout the contest.
Vrancken’s side must now regroup quickly and attempt to restore some pride in the second leg. Realistically, though, Benfica have already secured control of the tie, leaving Hearts with little more than the chance to prevent further damage and give their supporters a better performance on home soil.
