John Souttar is on the verge of ending his Rangers career after agreeing a three-year contract with Greek Super League side Aris Thessaloniki.
The 29-year-old Scotland international is expected to travel to Greece in the coming days to undergo a medical and complete the final formalities of the move. Greek reports suggest he could arrive in Thessaloniki on Sunday, with the transfer window in Greece remaining open until 15 September.
Rangers manager Derek McInnes confirmed earlier this week that Souttar had attracted interest from clubs in countries where the transfer window was still open.
“There’s interest from one or two clubs,” McInnes said. “One club is maybe a bit further down the line than the other. Maybe something happens over the next two or three days.”
Greek outlet Sport24 reports that Souttar is preparing to officially become an Aris player, with an agreement understood to be in place between the player, Rangers and the Thessaloniki club.
Aris finished fifth in the Greek Super League last season and moved for Souttar after identifying the need for further defensive reinforcements. The Greek club will reportedly pay around £1 million for the centre-back.
Souttar joined Rangers in 2022 and made 132 appearances for the club across all competitions. He arrived at Ibrox after spells with Dundee United and Hearts.
However, his position at Rangers became increasingly uncertain under McInnes. The manager indicated that the player’s long-term future would be better served elsewhere, while also making clear that Souttar could return to the squad if a move failed to materialise.
The defender has not made any of McInnes’ matchday squads this season, suggesting that Rangers had already decided during the summer that he would be allowed to leave.
