Blackburn Rovers midfielder Kristi Montgomery has been called up into the Scotland squad for the opening fixtures of the Nations League campaign after Kenny McLean and Kieran Tierney withdrew.
The 22-year-old joins Sébastien Pocognoli’s group at their La Manga training camp as the new Scotland head coach prepares for his first match in charge, away to Slovenia on Saturday.
Montgomery has been added as cover following the loss of two experienced internationals. Tierney was forced off during Celtic’s Scottish Premiership defeat to Rangers on Sunday, while Norwich City midfielder McLean featured in his side’s dramatic 4-3 loss to Bolton Wanderers.
The Blackburn player now has the chance to make an impression at senior international level during a significant week for Scotland, with Pocognoli beginning his tenure in the dugout.
Scotland’s schedule starts with the trip to Slovenia before a home meeting with Switzerland at Hampden Park. The national team then travel to North Macedonia, followed by the reverse fixture against Slovenia on home soil.
Montgomery’s addition offers Scotland another midfield option at a time when the squad has been disrupted by late fitness concerns.
The Leeds-born midfielder has played in all 8 league games for Blackburn this season, as they sit 16th in the English Championship.
